Signs of Storm Damage to Your Roof

Have you had a severe storm recently? If so, now is the best time to check the status of your roof for damage. You want to inspect your roof right now, so that if there is an issue, you will have it solved by the time the next storm comes. So, what are the usual signs of storm damage on your roof?

Water Damage

Water is one of your worst enemies when it comes to your roof. Heavy rain, ice, hail, or snow can all damage your roof, and possibly cause leaks. You might not even notice a leaking roof until it’s too late. To check for issues caused by water, look for dark spots on your ceiling, and gaps, chills, or breezes coming from strange areas in your home. You should also keep an eye out for anywhere water might pool.

Buildup of debris can be subtly worse than you might think. Obvious contenders for storm damage include objects like tree limbs, power lines, or other heavy objects. If there is major debris like that, you will need a professional to inspect the roof further for signs of damage. But even small debris can potentially damage your roof by ripping up shingles or tiles. This can cause roof leaks or back up your gutters.

Wind Damage

Wind is another huge issue when it comes to storm damage. High winds can rip off shingles and expose the structural components of your house to storms and other elements. While high winds are not as common, hurricanes still pass through New Jersey often enough, as do their weaker cousins like Nor’easters or Tropical Storms. Any of these storms can bring high winds that can simply lift pieces of your roof off your house.

General Inspection

If you’re concerned about the integrity of your roof, it’s time for a quick general inspection. To remind you of some of the signs to look out for, you should note any signs of dampness, wetness, rotting wood, mold, mildew, missing shingles or tiles, broken gutters, or broken flashing.
