Key Signs to Replace Your Gutters
Similar to the various components of your home’s exterior, your gutters also require periodic maintenance and replacement. Neglecting leaking gutters can potentially result in damaging leaks within your home and even pose a threat to the structural integrity of your roof. Therefore, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and responsive to any issues that may arise. Choosing to replace your gutters promptly can prevent many problems, safeguarding the well-being of your home.
Visible Breaks
Can you see cracks or splits in the gutter or any breaks in the seams? When you notice your gutters showing visible signs of deterioration, it’s a clear indication that it’s time to replace your gutters. While it’s possible to replace individual sections, it’s important to consider that if some sections are already showing wear and tear, the remaining sections will soon follow.
Sagging Gutters
Are your gutters sagging or pulling away from the house? That can mean a problem with the supports connecting them to the home. It can mean that your gutters are clogged and full of water, and therefore too heavy for the supports. You might be able to resolve that issue with a good gutter cleaning. It can also mean that your gutter fasteners are no longer working correctly. You could replace the fasteners, but since they usually are the same age as the gutters, you are also looking at potential failing gutters as well.
Rust or Peeling Paint
Many modern gutters are paint-free. Instead, we match the vinyl to the color of your exterior paint. Even new metal gutters may be painted in the factory for more durability. However, older gutters may be metal. Those gutters will have paint on them for weatherproofing. If you notice that the paint is peeling, the gutters are exposed to the weather and at risk for rust. Of course, if you see any rust, you can tell they are in trouble. Rust will quickly become a hole. Plus, rust can stain your home’s exterior.
Pooling Water or Basement Flooding
Look under your gutters. When they work correctly, they should divert water away from your home. If you notice pooling water or piles of dirt near your gutters, that indicates a problem. So, is there any flooding in your basement? You should get a gutter inspection if you have any of those problems. Your gutters may just need cleaning, but it could signal a bigger problem.
